The Alexandria Dukes are excited to announce our promotion to Division 5 for 2017.
Uncontested since 2013, the Suburban Rugby Union has chosen to restart Division 5 this year to give clubs the option of fielding a second grade side. That is, it’s not compulsory for the Dukes to field a second side every week, but we aim to do so as often as possible.
This was discussed at length by the committee and coach, and it was only because of the great turnout we’ve seen at training and games over the last few weeks we felt we were in a position to put our hands up for this competition. We’d especially like to thank our head coach AJ for the great job he’s done so far this year, giving us a reason to get down to training every week.
Since our founding in 2011, consistently fielding two sides has always been the Dukes’ medium-term growth goal. A second side provides opportunities for our newer and developing players to get plenty of game time, and creates competition for selection in the firsts. It also creates opportunities for our increasing network of old boys, who may be unable to commit to training and playing every week. We’d love to see you down for a run as often as you can make it.
So consider this a call to arms – turnout has been great so far this season, but we really need to push to put on a second side more often than not. To anyone that hasn’t made it down so far this year, especially our old boys and semi-retired players, we’d love to see you down soon.
Round 1 is this Saturday 22nd April – a home game vs Menai at Booralee Park, Botany. If you’re keen for a run make sure you let us know – send us a message or contact our coach AJ directly.
We look forward to contesting the Jeffrey and Noice Cups in 2017.
