Meldrum Cup – Round 1 – Alexandria Dukes vs Terrey Hills – Wrap up

Alexandria Dukes
get first up win against Terrey Hills in a hard fought encounter 10-8.

This
was a great result for the Alexandria Dukes RFC to start their inaugural
season.
It
was a great day for Rugby.  Clear skies,
moderate temperature and a ground in pristine condition.  There was a big anticipation from players and
spectators, as the Dukes ran took to the field of battle for the first time.
The
first half saw a few squandered chances form the Dukes and some penalties
putting them under pressure, allowing Terrey Hills some good field
position.  The biggest impact in the
opening stanza, was the scrum from the Dukes.
It pushed the Terrey Hills pack off the ball a number of times, and
either put the half under pressure or won a tight head.  The Dukes defence held tight, but the line
was crossed after 15 minutes into the game when a turn over on the 22 metres
from a good Terrey Hills Counter ruck saw a backline play finished off by the
Terrey Hills winger.
The
play went up and down the pitch a number of times, before Terrey Hills was
given a penalty attempt in front to take the score to 8-0.
A
huge Kymm Beer hit just before half time saw him cautioned for dangerous play,
but remained on the field without visiting the Sin-bin.  Half
time came shortly afterwards with the score remaining 8-0 at the break.

After
a rousing halftime speech from George, the boys went out hard and the tempo was
definitely raised.  The commitment on the
ball was much stronger and the talk was much louder than the first half.  Early pressure and some tiring Terrey Hills
players led to them having some sloppy ruck work.  Eventually the Dukes got a penalty and took
it forward.  The ball went straight out
the back line and it was Kymm Beer, who scored the first ever, Competition
try.  The conversion was missed, and the
score remained 8-5

The
Dukes were keen now to try and put some more points on the board and were
pressuring Terrey Hills more and more.
The percentage of play in the opposition half was definitely in the
Dukes favour and Terrey Hills were making a few more mistakes.  A penalty for not releasing after a great chase and tackle from Dukes Winger Lewis Royal saw
the Terrey Hills centre given a yellow card.
From the tap the Dukes crossed for their 2nd try
of the afternoon, going to the newly appointed club captain Billy Hodgetts with the support of a few of his friends, to take the lead 10-8.

The
Dukes continued to pressure the line for the rest of the game, but some last
hand mistakes, led to the play breaking down.
The
last scoring opportunity came with a penalty goal attempt with 4 minutes to
go,which was missed.

The final play was a scrum to Terrey Hills,
and a huge push saw the ball come out the Dukes side, and a short run of the ball out of
play for a great first up win.
