The Dukes coming of a big win against Manly Savers travelled to Rockdale for their local derby full of confidence going into the game.
The first 10 minutes of the game was quite physical with both teams making mistakes. The Dukes having the better field position, missing a 35 metre penalty. But it was one mistake and some sloppy tackling by the Dukes which again was their undoing and all the field position was wasted. The Rockdale team took a 7 – 0 lead with a converted try.
From the restart the Dukes took it to the Rockdale forwards and were pushing them around the park. But, it was the basic things which were letting them down, with too much loose ball at the back of the ruck and body height going into contact. However, it was the Dukes to score next with a good back line play and leading try scorer Dennis Lee diving over in the corner with a mountain of Rockdale cover to take the score to 7-5.
Rockdale scored the next 2 tries in fairly quick succession and the score was out to 17 – 5 with 10 minutes to go in the first half. The Dukes had to pick up the intensity, and from the restart, played the rest of the half down in the Rockdale half, nearly going over a couple of times with some nice cold ball, but it was the backs, and that man Dennis Lee who went over off a set play from a scrum to bring the Dukes back into the game. The Try was converted and the half time score was 17-12.
The second half was fairly one sided, with the Rockdale team lifting a gear and making close to zero mistakes. The one highlight from the 2nd half from the Dukes was a late try to Kymm Beer, who ran onto a Jacob Tautaiolefua kick to score a try and convert.
