Old Boys Day – Report

The Inaugural Dukes Old Boys Day was a huge success, recording a win in the Old Boys/2nd Grade game, as well as a win for our 1st XV. As many of you know, the First Grade match was club founder Phillip Tovey’s final ever rugby match, and the day was a fine send off for him.

Dukes Rugby’s 1st and 2nd XV combined.

The day began with a mixture of Old Boys and Second Grade players running on the field to take on Waverley. Thankfully there were unlimited interchanges as MANY of our players couldn’t have lasted the full game!

One of the great highlights of the game was a swift 3 try haul (in only 15 minutes!) from inside centre, Jeremy Nelson. Another standout from the game was a massive effort from loose forward Alex Cavanaugh to finish off the game with a charge-down try in the corner. Second Grade running out winners 29 points to 10.

A huge thanks to ALL who played and were involved in the Second Grade game, the day wouldn’t have been what it was without you guys and we hope to see all of you back next year to strap on the boots again!

Second Grade getting stuck into the team song…

After hearing the Duke’s Song being belted out by our Second Grade, the 1st XV were fired up and ready to go. The boys then were lead onto the field to take on Clovelly by retiring Club Founder Phillip Tovey.

Hughesy’s Big Break!

Highlights included tries scored by Hoskins, Milne, Yershov, Hinds. Reserve winger Phil Hughes very nearly bagged a 5 pointer in the second half with a big bust down the right touchline, evading defenders and just being brought down 10 metres shy of the line.

Another highlight of the day was seeing Phil Tovey put 2 points on the board with a conversion for a try. It was from bang in front, no more than a 10 metre kick… but I’m sure over the beers and the years, the distance might grow metre by metre each time!

In the end, our Dukes boys took away a bonus point win to cap off the season, final score 26-10. A minor milestone for the Dukes club went along with this game as we recorded our first ever win over Clovelly. A huge thanks is extended to all those who assisted the club on the day and in the lead up to our Old Boys day to make it a success!

A final note, our presentation day will be taking place at South Coogee Bowling Club, 22nd of August at 2pm. Bring along family and friends for a great day of Barefoot Bowls with Dukes Rugby!
