Round 4 Match Report
Round 4 saw the Alexandria Dukes at McKay No.2 for its home game against Dee Why.
Both teams were desperate for a win, Dee Why being 0-3 and after the previous weeks loss to the Dukes it was a chance for them to get back in the winners circle.
The match started and was the Dukes on the attack early with some strong forward play, with some huge hits from BIlly Hodgetts, putting his opposite number squarley on his back a number of times. The pressure was kept on until the 22nd minute with Dee Why only being in the Dukes half one previous time, broke away from one of those sloppy pieces of play, where a bounce of the ball could go anywhere. A chase ensured , but the Dee Why winger got to the line. The conversion was unsuccessful. 5-0
From the restart the ball didn’t go 10 metres and it seemed like a replay of the previous week, but the heads were kept high and the scrum was tight securing the ball and going back on the attack. The dukes short game was very strong and the backs were starting to make in roads through the Dee Why defence. In the 32nd minute, Dennis Lee stormed onto a ball and was never going to be stopped, scoring his 4th try of the season under the posts. the try was converted and the Dukes took a 7-5 lead to the break.
The 2nd half started much like the 1st with the Dukes on the attack, but the last passes just didn’t stick.
At about the 60th minute Rhys Dodson, Dukes fullback, came into the defensive line and took a beautiful intercept pass, and he ran 60 metres, before being brought down just before the line. Unfortunately the support was not with him and the ball was turned over.
The Dukes continued on the attack and the scrum was moving the Dee Why pack all over the park. The line out was strong with the input from Benn Robinson at training, however the ball just would not stick.
There were a couple of injuries with Sam Tutaki going of with a suspected broken thumb (later confirmed) and Phil Tovey going off with a suspected torn Achilles (Only Grade three calf tear).
The Dee Why squad started using the strong wind in the last 10 minutes kicking deep into the Dukes territory. 1 Dukes mistakes ended up with a try ensuing from a tight head scrum, which had been so dominant all day. The try went un-converted 10-7
Another mistake from a kick put the Dukes under pressure and playing catch up football, and little time left on the clock, made the dukes try to run the ball out from their own line. Another simple knock on, led to a final try to Dee Why in the corner. Final Score 15-7
A disappointing result given the strong defence and attack from the Dukes, but it was a much improved platform that the Dukes had working.
